Lab 4 - POP 3, MIME and e-mail
Introduction to Lab 4 - POP 3, MIME and e-mail Lab
This lab has two parts.
Part one deals with some simple configuration and use of the AS/400
as an SMTP and POP3 server (complete with MIME support). You will be
sending mail from an traditional AS/400 OfficeVision/400 user (ITSOICnn)
to a POP 3 client (ITSOPnnP) that you will be creating and configurating. Once this is configured, then you will be sending all sorts of MIME mail between your PC and the AS/400.
Part two will help guide you to configuring the Netscape mail client.
Where are things located for TEAMnn? (nn=your team number)

Step-by-Step lab instructions - Part 1 E-mail (SMTP and POP)
- On your AS/400: Create a user profile that will be your POP 3 client
- CRTUSRPRF ITSOPnnP
- Make sure you remember the password...as you will need it later when
configuring the POP3 client on the PC.
- Take all the defaults
- On your AS/400: Add this user into the System Directory
- WRKDIRE, option 1 to Add
- Suggest to make the User ID and User profile the same (ITSOPnnP)
- The Address is the AS/400 host name
- You must specify a unique Description
- Page down three times until you see Mail Service Level. Change this
to 2=System message store.
- Preferred address should be 3=SMTP name
- Then, press PF=19. The SMTP user ID will be ITSOPnnP. The SMTP
domain will be the full host name and domain of the AS/400 host.
- On your PC: Configure your POP 3 client to use the AS/400 as the
SMTP and POP3 server.
- Double click on the TCP/IP Configuration icon (normally found in the OS/2 System, then TCP/IP folders, but I have placed it in the LaunchPad for you...)
- Select Mail tag
- Make sure the Mail environment is LAN only
- Change the Mail user ID to ITSOPnnP
- Select the right arrow
- POP mail server is our AS/400 host name and domain
- POP ID and POP password is the user profile and password you just
created on the AS/400 as ITSOPnnP.
- Select Sendmail
- Reply domain is our AS/400 host name and domain
Save these configuration changes.
OK, your configuration is done. Now it is time to test.
Step-by-Step lab instructions - Part 2 Sending e-mail
- On your AS/400: Send a note from ITSOICnn to ITSOPnnP
- On your PC: Start the POP 3 client mailbox
- This should start a request to signon to the AS/400 POP 3
server as a client, and retrieve any and all mail items.
- On your PC: Send text and attached binary (a GIF, perhaps) to
- ITSOICnn and ITSOPnnP (your own mailbox on the AS/400)
- On your AS/400: Look for the incoming mail item(s).
- Option 2 from the OfficeVision/400 main menu
Answer to Question 1.
- Try option 13=File local to see if you can move the binary to
a shared folder.
- Send annoying messages to your neighbor!
Step-by-Step lab instructions - Part 3 - Netscape client
- Configure Netscape Mail client as your (same) AS/400 ITSOPnnP pop user
- Selection Options, then
- Mail and News Preferences...
- Servers...complete the
- Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
- Incoming Mail (POP) Server
- Pop User Name
- and maybe change the Check for Mail option to once every minute or two.
Answer to Question 2.
- Maybe, update your Identity found in the Mail and News Preference
- Send and receive mail with the Netscape e-mail client
- Click on Window, then Netscape Mail
- Send a mail item to yourself (ITSOPnnP)
- Try to add an attachment of a GIF (from the \class directory on your PC)
- Send a mail item to your neighbor. Add an attachment which is the URL to your own 'killer application' in /ITSOICnn/welcome.htm.
Questions and Answers Table
Question
| Answer
|
Question 1: How many mail items did you see in ITSOICnn's incoming mail?
| There should be one for each body part you sent from the MIME compliant client. One text, plus one for each binary you sent along with the mail item.

Question 2: What two servers did you enter for both the Outgoing and Incoming Mail?
| There are two ways of answering this question. One is that you specified the same for both. That is, the AS/400 is the one server that is handling both the outgoing SMTP and incoming POP mail traffic from the point of view of the Netscape client.
The other way to look at the question is to say that we do have two servers on the AS/400 - one is the MIME compliant SMTP server and the other is the MIME compliant POP 3 server. Both are listening on different ports but they both happen to be on the same system - the AS/400.
